MEET MARY
House District 75 is one of the most dynamic areas in all of Texas, encompassing the fastest growing parts of El Paso and the towns of Horizon City, San Elizario, Socorro, Clint, Fabens, and Tornillo. Raised in the Lower Valley, and proud graduate of Clint High School, Mary is currently in her 5th term in the Texas Legislature.
Mary received her Doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction- Cultural Studies in Education at UT-Austin, her Master’s Degree from St. Edward’s University and Bachelor Degree from the University of Texas at Austin #HookEm!
Previously, she has worked at the National Hispanic Institute, the University of Texas at Austin, and Southwestern University as Assistant Dean for Student Multicultural Affairs. She is currently the Executive Director for The Mexican American School Boards Association.
Present day, Mary serves on the Public Education Committee and is Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee. Throughout her time as a State Representative, Mary has authored numerous bills to help advance the public school system , increase economic development, and support agriculture in House District 75 and across Texas.
In addition to her legislative committees, she is currently serving as Co-Chair of the Board of Latino Legislative Leaders, as well as her second term as Vice Chair for the Mexican American Legislative Caucus. Additionally, Mary serves as Chair of the new Texas House LGBTQ Caucus.
One of Mary’s proudest achievements has been her successes in helping hundreds of families in colonias access public water and sewer systems for the first time. Mary has also been successful in promoting legislation in support of El Paso’s agricultural community, and students and teachers across the state. Furthermore, she continues to work for a more inclusive society and to create a better future for her local community.
Mary has been recognized by Latino Leaders Magazine for her leadership in education, was recognized as one of ten “Next Generation Latinas” by Latina Magazine, and as one of the 10 newly-elected politicians to watch in the nation by NBC Latino.
